Sciatica usually refers to pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that follows the path of a nerve into the leg. It is a symptom pattern rather than a complete diagnosis, and it can vary greatly from one person to another.

Why symptoms can travel

Nerve roots in the lower spine contribute to sensation and strength in the legs. Irritation around a nerve may be felt away from the back, sometimes below the knee. A clinician may ask about the symptom path and test movement, reflexes, sensation and strength.

Activity and imaging

Many people are encouraged to continue suitable normal activity rather than remain in bed. Imaging is not routinely needed in a non-specialist setting unless serious underlying disease is suspected or a scan is likely to change management.

Warning signs

Urgent medical evaluation is important for new bladder or bowel changes, numbness around the saddle region, rapidly worsening leg weakness or severe symptoms affecting both legs. These are not situations for routine self-care.
