The phrase “slipped disc” can sound alarming, although discs do not literally slip out of place. A bulge or herniation may irritate nearby tissue or a nerve, but scan findings and symptoms do not always match neatly.

The scan is only part of the story

Clinical decisions consider symptoms, function and examination findings alongside imaging. Degenerative findings can also appear in people without pain, so a report should be interpreted in context by a qualified clinician.

Conservative management

Depending on the presentation, care may include education, continued suitable activity, progressive exercise and symptom-guided support. NICE advises that manual therapy for low back pain should be considered only as part of a package that includes exercise, with or without psychological support.

When specialist review matters

Progressive weakness, significant neurological changes, red-flag symptoms or pain that remains severely limiting despite appropriate care may require medical or specialist assessment. Treatment decisions should reflect individual risks and goals.
